George Cheesbrough & George Clough

Private George Cheesbrough

Prince of Wales’ Own (West Yorkshire) Regiment, 5th Battalion, Service no. 675

Born: 14th February 1873.  Died: 3rd May 1940.

Story

George was born and baptised in Kippax on 13th April 1873.  He was the son of John Cheesbrough (1834-1922) and Ann Mossley (1836-1893).  The family moved to Castleford, where George found work as a glass blower.  In 1892, George signed up for the Coldstream Guards, and then transferred to the King’s Own Yorkshire Light Infantry.  He moved to 97 Mary Street, West Ham, and married Maria Ann Sims who was from Knottingley in 1897.  By 1906, George left the Army and moved back to 27 Union Street, Hightown, Castleford, with Maria and their children, and he took up work again as a glass blower.  With the outbreak of War, George re-enlisted with the West Yorkshire Regiment on 28th September 1914, despite then being 41 years-old.  After the War, George returned to Glass blowing, and by 1939 had retired to live at 24 Wood View Bungalows, Castleford, and passed away the following year aged 67.

Private George Clough

Prince of Wales’ Own (West Yorkshire) Regiment, Service no. 17148

Born: 2nd September 1880.  Died: 17th November 1950

George is mentioned on a Kippax Roll of Honour, published 18th August 1915, as having enlisted for the Army, and this matches the George Clough under Service no. 17148 who landed in France on 26th August 1915, but the service no. and regiment are not certain.  George was the son of William Clough and Mary Ann Walton, and was born in Birstall, but moved to Kippax as an infant.  He married Hannah Firth in Kippax on 30th October 1905, and had a son, Thomas Firth Clough in 1906.  After the War, George ran the Navigation Inn, Lock lane, Castleford (below).  He passed away at the age of 70.
