Private Frederick Robinson Barber

Born: 28th February 1880.  Died: 9th April 1917, aged 37.

Story

Private Barber was born in Monkhill, Pontefract.  His parents were Joseph Barber (1845-1921, a coal miner) and Anne Cave (1842-1931).  On 31st March 1902, Frederick married Elizabeth Annie Amesbury in Pontefract, where he was also residing at 13 Denwell Terrace.  He was a Stonemason, and became the father of six children with Annie: Robin, Milly, Joe, Freddie, Lily, and Arthur, who was born after his father’s death.  Frederick was killed in action on the 9th April 1917, near Arras, France, and was buried in Roclincourt Valley cemetery, Grave ref. 2 C 17

 His wife, Annie, was issued a war widow’s passport to visit the grave, in 1921. Private Barber was grandfather to Brian Barber of Gibson Lane, Kippax. Brian has a collection of documents and letters from his grandfather’s time away at war.
