Private Fred Barker

Story

Private Barker was a native of Derbyshire, having been born in Eckington, and later lived in Pinxton before he moved to Kippax, and lodged with the Lindley family for over five years, at 26 New Street, Kippax, whilst he worked at Ledston Luck Pit before the war. The news of his death was received in a letter to George Caleb Lindley and Eva Lindley (née Mennell) from Fred’s platoon sergeant, who said that Fred had been killed instantly by shrapnel.  The date of the letter was 28th April 1916. Fred’s Battalion served in France and Flanders. In 1916 they were involved in the Battles of Delville wood and The Ancre.

Fred’s body taken from the front line and buried with military honours and a plain white cross marked his last resting place. Subsequently, he has been re-interred in the Essex Farm Cemetery pictured below.
