Private Frank Varley

Born: 2nd November 1895.  Died: 1962.

Story

Frank was born in Kippax and baptised on 27th November 1895, and was brought up on the High Street (pictured below).  He was the son of John Varley (1856-1921) and Mary Elizabeth Robinson (1864-1903).  Frank was one of eleven siblings, and after his mother passed away aged 39, Frank, his father and four of his siblings went to live with his eldest sister, Emma, who had married Charles Plows in 1906, and already had 3 children of her own.

Frank was a Belt Boy at the Colliery before the War, and was mentioned as having enlisted in the press on 18th August 1915, but it is not known in which regiment he may have served.

After the War, Frank married Minnie Theodora Hutchinson in Aysgarth, North Yorkshire in 1926, and the couple had two daughters, Nora on 19th February 1931, and Elsie the year after.  In 1939, the family were living in Castleford, where Frank was working as a Steward at the Roundhill Recreation Club.  His wife Minnie was working in the same club as a Stewardess.  Frank passed away at the age of 67, and Minnie passed away in 1977 aged 78.
