Story
A notice in the local newspaper gave the news of the death of Private Smith. It said that a letter had been received by Mr and Mrs Smith giving official news that their son had been killed in action on Wednesday 26th September 1916.
Private Smith was single and was well known in the village of Kippax. Formerly he worked at Allerton pit but at the time of enlisting in June 1915 he was employed at Wheldale pit in Castleford. He served 7 months in Egypt.
The records show that Private Smith was killed in France/Flanders but no exact location is known. He is commemorated on Thiepval Memorial Pier and Face 3c and 3d, The Somme, France.
