Born: 21st September 1891. Died: 7th February 1965.
Story
On 18th August 1915, Ernest was one of 150 men from Kippax listed by the Castleford and Pontefract Express as having enlisted, although the Regiment was not listed and has not been found, so it is not certain whether he saw active service. Ernest Shackleton was baptised 25th October 1891 in Kippax, and was the son of Laban Shackleton (1865-1945) and Ellen Wilkinson (1870-1955) who are buried together in Kippax (below left). The family lived at Bramley Terrace, Kippax in 1911, and Ernest was a Pony Driver at the colliery. After the War, on Christmas Eve 1921, Ernest married the widow of fellow Kippax solider John Robinson, who had married Lily Green on 6th August 1917, but was killed on 23rd October 1917. Lily was pregnant when John was killed, and her son, whom she named John Robinson in memory of her husband, passed away on the day he was born, 5th March 1919. Ernest and Lily had a son, George on 4th July 1922, and moved to 25 Broughton Avenue, Bentley with Arksey, where Ernest left coal mining, and worked as a Fish Fryer, assisted by his son. Lily passed away at the age of 49, and is buried in Kippax with Ernest, who died at the age of 73 (below right).
