Private Ephraim Wilson

Northumberland Fusiliers, Service no. 4322

Born: 15th November 1874.  Died: 1946

Story

Ephraim was born in Methley.  He was the son of Peter Wilson and Annie Parker.  The family moved house frequently.  From Methley they moved to Featherstone, then to Fairburn, then to Castleford.  Ephraim married Emma Parkinson from Pontefract, on 18th May 1895 in Castleford, whilst both were living together at 35 Smith Street, Wheldale Lane, Castleford.  They had a son Charles Edmund in 1896, and then moved to Holmfield Lane, Kippax, where they had two more sons, John Willie in 1898 and Frank in 1902.  They moved to Robinson Lane, and had two daughters, Dorothy in 1905 and Annie in 1910.  Ephraim was working as a coal miner.  On 16th April 1915, it was reported that Ephraim, along with Dick Hutt and Charles Morley had registered for Home service, and were available if required.  Ephraim looks to have been called up to the Northumberland Fusiliers on 10th July 1915, and served in the Balkans.  Given that he was nearly 40 years-old, it is likely he would have served in one of the Service Battalions supporting front line troops, who were fighting against the Bulgarians (Bulgarian Artillery pictured below).  After the War, Ephraim lived at 22 Robinson Lane, and was an unemployed general labourer by 1939.  He passed away at the age of 71.
