Elvin Smith

Born: 4th December 1916.

Story

Elvin was born in Morpeth, Northumberland, and married Vera Saunders in Allerton Bywater on 19th December 1939 (pictured below).  He left his job to join the Army, and was a friend of Kenneth Silkstone who also served.  Elvin went to France and was involved in the Dunkirk evacuation.  In the retreat towards Dunkirk, he experienced the terror of being dive bombed by the German aircraft attacks on the British transport lorries.  He said it was a case of jumping from the lorries and into the ditch for cover, then getting back into the lorries after the attack.  Elvin was fortunate to make it back to England and safety, but his wartime experiences caused him sleepless nights into old age.  Whilst serving, he met Leonard Wilson, Harry Stanley Harrison, Fred Adams and Frank Sutton in Gibraltar.

After the War, Elvin and Vera (pictured below in 1954) moved to 9 Preston View, Swillington.  Vera passed away on 13th July 1983, and Elvin in 1995.
