Private Eli Nicholson

Prince of Wales’s Own (West Yorkshire) Regiment, 1st Battalion, Service no. 81292

Born: 1889.  Died: 27th May 1951.

Story

Eli’s parents were John Nicholson and Sarah Bleasby.  His mother passed away in 1898, and Eli married Alice Jacob before the War on 23rd August 1913.  Eli enlisted with the Northumberland Fusiliers on 10th December 1915, he was 5 ft 1 inch tall, and transferred to the West Yorkshire Regiment, 1st Battalion. 

Eli suffered from myalgia, which is essentially muscle pain, whilst in the Army.  Due to this complaint he was discharged and returned to coal mining. After the War, Eli returned to coal mining and lived at Rogers Fold, and passed away in 1951 aged 61.  His daughter Agnes Nicholson (pictured below) was the Kippax Rose Queen in 1934:
