Story
Douglas Grimmett was the son of Thomas Frederick Hayden Grimmett (1894-1982), who worked on the railways, before becoming a lorry driver, and Edith Ibbotson (1897-1962) who married in Beeston on 1st January 1921. The family moved to Kippax, and they lived at Hazeldene and then Briarfield on Westfield Lane. Before the War, Thomas was a box maker, employed by Messrs. Wilkinson, horse slaughterers, Hunslet.
Douglas joined the Lincolnshire Regiment in 1943 at the age of 18 as a Private, and aged 20 he was awarded the Military Medal for rescuing a comrade in the fighting around Arnhem.
The Allies had been defeated in the Battle of Arnhem which took place between 17th and 26th September 1944, as part of Operation Market Garden; but Douglas’s bravery was reported on 27th July 1945, and he was awarded the Military Medal in relation to the Second Battle of Arnhem, known as Operation Anger in April 1945 (below). By this time, Douglas had been promoted to Lance Corporal, and was serving in Germany. After the War, Douglas married Joyce Mann in 1948, and they moved to 3 Queen Street, Carlton.
