Denis was the son of Richard Hodgson, a Drayman and Tar works labourer from Tadcaster and Annie Proctor from Micklefield. Denis was baptised in Kippax on 23rd February 1896, and they lived at Kippax Hall. By 1911, they had moved to 20 Spring Grove Mount, Thwaite Gate, Hunslet, where Denis worked as a paper boy. Four years later, on 5th April 1915, Denis enlisted into the Army. He was 5 ft 9 inches tall, and was working as a Clerk. He served in Sulva Bay (from 3rd October 1915), Alexandria (from 5th January 1916), and finally Cairo. Denis was hospitalised for three days with influenza. He was promoted to Sergeant during the War, and worked as a clerk for the Army. However he received a severe reprimand on 28th February 1918 for neglect of duty when he failed to register an important letter on the index card. He left the Army on 28th September 1919, and passed away aged 74.
