Acting Sergeant David Sherburn

Born: 4th February 1891.  Died: 12th February 1987

Story

David was the son of coal miner David Sherburn (1850-1895) and Caroline Smith (1861-1935), and was born and brought up on Leeds Road, Kippax.  After his father passed away, his mother re-married John Walker, and they continued to live on Leeds Road. 

David was working as a Canal Clerk when he enlisted as a Gunner in the Royal Garrison Artillery.  He served in France from 28th June 1915, and was promoted to Acting Sergeant before he left the Army on 15th June 1919. 

After the War, David married Louie Veitch in Bridlington in March 1925.  Louie was the daughter of Joseph Gibson Veitch who was the Headmaster at Kippax Infants School.  Louie’s brother, Reginald William Veitch, also served in the War, and was injured.  The couple moved to Church Lane, Garforth, and had a son, Danton Sherburn on 15th August 1934.  David was working as a Road Transport Manager.

Louie, who was born on 17th June 1901, passed away in 1948, whilst living at Tudor Cottage, Church Lane, Garforth.  The following year, David married her younger sister Marjorie Veitch.  David passed away at 47 Church Lane, Garforth at the age of 96.
