David and Robert Sherburn

Story

Robert was born 27th January 1921, and was the son of Robert Sherburn (1885-1960) and Mary Elizabeth Crowther (1885-1963) who married in 1911.  In the 1920s, Robert and Mary ran a shop from the Hermitage, 35 High Street (Robert pictured below around 1924 with his mother), and shortly after this in 1930, the family set up a company running buses between Kippax and Castleford via Allerton Bywater.  Robert Snr. was also a haulage contractor.

On 19th January 1945, it was reported that Robert had served in North West Europe, before moving on to India, and whilst there he had met Joe Cooper, who was originally from Kippax, but had moved to Garforth.  Robert married Mary D Hewitt in 1954, and passed away on 19th October 2002 in Garforth.

Robert’s brother David Sherburn also served.  He was born 12th March 1918, and was named after his uncle David Sherburn (1891-1987) who was a sergeant in the First World War, and his grandfather (1850-1895).  Before the War, David was an Electrician and motor traffic manager.  He married Vera Gertrude Holloway (1926-1999) in 1954 and continued to live at the Hermitage, running the petrol station from the side of the house for many years.  David passed away on 29th September 1983.
