Born: 1920

Story

Daisy was the youngest child born to Thomas Firth Hewitt (1878-1936) and Agnes Watkinson (1883-1970), who married in Kippax on 18th November 1900.

During the War, Daisy worked at Thorp Arch Ammunitions Factory, filling shells with cordite, and making detonators.

Daisy married Jack Sumpner of Castleford, who was in the merchant navy.  Their wedding took place in February 1945, at St. Mary’s Church, Kippax. The couple had one daughter, Susan, who is married to Peter Norton and still lives in Kippax.  Daisy lived in Kippax for the rest of her life, working locally and being a keen ballroom dancer and supporter of Kippax Amateur Operatic Society.  She lived with Jack at 44 Leeds Road, and later moved to 24 Woodlands Court.  In her retirement, she worked in the Prince of Wales Hospice Charity shop until she was in her nineties.  Daisy lived to the age of 99 years, and passed away in 2019.
