Fusilier Charles May

Born: 5th October 1919.

Story

Charles was the son of Prince May (1890-1970) and Mindwell Hudson (1892-1973) pictured below at their wedding in Kippax on 2nd May 1914.  Prince had served in Gallipoli during the First World War, and his two brothers also served: David, who was discharged injured after being struck by the force of an exploding shell; and George, who was killed in action on 14th July 1918.  Mindwell Hudson’s brother Benjamin was also killed on the first day of the Battle of the Somme, so the family had been greatly affected by the Great War.

Before the outbreak of the Second World War, Charles was living with his sister Dorothy and her husband Harry Chew, at 11 Mount Pleasant, and Charles was working as a Hoffman Presser for a tailor.  At the start of the War, Charles was based in the UK serving in anti-aircraft (example below), but was later wounded in Germany during the Allies’ last big advance (also below).

Charles married Ethel Wilson after the War in 1947, and passed away on 3rd June 1973:
