Kings Own Yorkshire Light Infantry 1st Battalion, Service no. 21981

Husband of Lily Connell of 13 Church Crescent, Swillington, Leeds

Died 4th October 1915, aged 23, buried in Souchez, France

Story

Born in Bradford, Private Hardman was killed at Loos in the Arras area of France and was buried at Cabaret-Rouge British Cemetery in Nord, France ref XXXI, G11.  The cemetery was named after a very long trench and the trench was used as a start for the burial ground.  Private Hardman was killed on Monday 4th October 1915 aged 23.  On 5th November 1915, he was the first man from Kippax to be reported as killed in in the War, although Private George Oswald Adams, who was missing, was subsequently confirmed as having been killed before Charles.

Before joining the Army at the outbreak of the war, Charles was employed as a miner at Kippax. He left behind his wife Lily and two children, Frances and Arthur, who were born in 1912 and 1914 respectively.  Lily re-married in 1922 to John W. Barker.

At the bottom of Charles’s gravestone are the words ‘Gone But Not Forgotten’, for which his wife was charged five shillings and sixpence.
