Private Bertha Backhouse

Story

Bertha’s parents were Arthur Pickard Backhouse (1884-1923) and Hannah Silverwood (1890-1963), who married in Kippax on 13th July 1912.  Bertha’s father died when she was 10, and her mother Hannah re-married Arthur Howson (1890-1969) in 1930.  Bertha was a short Hand Typist before the War, and was present at the ‘Savings Mean More Ships’ unveiling in Kippax (below) in 1942.  Bertha lived at 11 and then 12 Helena Street, and attended Wren’s events such as the one below left from October 1949.  She never married and died aged 82 in May 1995.
