Coldstream Guards, Service no. 26458
Born: 30th May 1895. Died: 1976.
Story
Arthur was born in Kippax, and baptised on 30th June 1895. He was the son of Frederick Walker and his second wife, whom he had married in 1892, Mary Jane Sigston, after his first wife Maria Rhodes (1854-1888) had passed away. The family lived on Ashfield Terrace, off Station Road (pictured below), an area which witnessed a high proportion of volunteers. In 1911, Arthur was an Assistant Onsetter at Ledston Luck Colliery, and enlisted under the Lord Derby Scheme on 11th December 1915. He was not called up until 24th April 1918, when he was a 5 ft 7 inches tall coal miner. He was posted 27th April 1918, but did not serve abroad. After leaving the Army, Arthur married Ethel Hambleton in 1920, and they had three children: Betty on 31st August 1928; Joan on 1st October 1937; and John on 28th May 1939. In 1939, they were living at 15 South View, Kippax, and Arthur’s mother-in-law, Keturah (née Green, 1878-1951) was living with them. Arthur was still working as a coal miner, and passed away at the age of 81.
