Private Arthur Goodall

Story
Arthur was the first of seven children born to Squire Goodall (1861-1950) and his wife Susannah. Squire was a coal miner, and had been one of the rescuers at the 1896 Peckfield Colliery disaster. Arthur was born on School Lane, Kippax, baptised on 30th January 1889, and was living on the High Street in 1911, working as a Pony Driver in the pit. He was mentioned as an early volunteer in the War effort, but it is not known in which regiment he served. After the War, he married Jane Atkinson on 10th July 1919, and they had their first daughter, Vera on 30th June 1920 (pictured below). By 1939, the family had moved to 16 Park Avenue, Kippax, and then to 42 The Cottages, Ledston Luck, where Arthur was still working as a coal miner. He passed away at the age of 75.




Private Charles Bertie Goodall

Born: 1881. Died: 19th January 1934
Story
Charles was baptised in Kippax on 9th January 1881. He was the son of George Goodall (1859-1937) and Martha Austin (1861-1933). Charles married Bertha Brookes (1886-1928) in Kippax on 1st June 1903, and the couple had a son William in 1903, and a daughter Edith in 1905. In 1911, the family were living on the High Street, and Charles was a Drayman bringing in goods for the Co-operative Society.
Charles is mentioned as having enlisted early in the War, when he would have been 36 years-old. He joined the KOYLI Labour Corps, and was reported to be missing in action. To the relief of his family, it was subsequently reported on 4th May 1917 that he had been found again. He passed away at the age of 53, and was buried in Kippax on 22nd January 1934.
