Arthur was the son of Frederick George Dyer (11.04.1889-1963) and Helena Hetherington (09.09.1888-1949), and the family lived at Hazel Dene, Butt Hill. His father was a Colliery Clerk, and served in the First World War in the 199th Labour Company. Arthur was a member of the 1st Kippax Scouts and was a pupil at Castleford Grammar School. He attended Trinity Methodist Church. Arthur served his articles with Mr. F. W. Henson, E.S.A.A. (Castleford) and became a member of the Society of Incorporated Accountants and Auditors (A.S.A.A.). Arthur’s first experience in the War was when he landed in France on D-Day. He was subsequently mentioned in Dispatches for gallant and distinguished service in North West Europe. “One of the best friends one could have” was a message describing him, sent to him home by a comrade who was serving alongside him.
After the War, Arthur married a Dutch woman, Johanna Francisca Antonia Maria Bex (6th April 1913 – 18th August 1995) in Holland on 6th July 1946, and they returned to England, had four sons, and Arthur continued to work as a Chartered Accountant. After his wife passed away, Arthur re-married Maria J.H. Rieter in 1996, and passed away himself in Harrogate on 21st December 2014, aged 94.
