Prince of Wales’ Own (West Yorkshire) Regiment, Service no. 12222
Born: 26th April 1892. Died: 19th April 1987
Story
Arthur’s parents were Frederick Brown Daniel (1866-1948) and Elizabeth Greaves (1871-1937). Arthur was born in Leeds, and came to Kippax in 1899, at the age of seven, when his father opened up a butcher’s shop on the High Street. Arthur was educated in Kippax, and was working as a grocer’s assistant before the War. Arthur enlisted with the West Yorkshire Regiment, and served in France from 9th September 1915.
Arthur was injured immediately at the Battle of Loos, so he transferred to the Labour Corps under Service No. 317940, and then to the Royal Army Pay Corps under Service no. 18031. He still listed his profession as a solider on his marriage certificate after he wed Sarah Jane Hemsworth (1891-1968) in Garforth on 27th June 1917. He was discharged from the army with a disability pension on 1st October 1918. They had their only child, Ronald Daniel (1918-1988), born on 25th May 1918. During the War, Arthur sent a Kippax Postcard to a lady in Roundhay which has survived, which also references him starting work at the pit.

On 17th December 1937, after the death of his mother, Arthur left Kippax, and the Skyrack Express summarised his service during the War, and how instrumental he had become in Peace-time. He was also the village watchmaker.

Arthur was living in Pudsey in 1939, and was still working as a civil servant for the Ministry of Labour. His family later moved to Bridlington, and lived at 8 Bempton Oval, where Arthur passed away at the age of 94. He was brought back to Garforth and buried with his late wife Sarah.
