Sergeant Alfred Kenneth Wright

Story

Alfred Kenneth Wright was the son of Alfred Wright (1894-1951) and Winifred Foy (1894-1933) who married in 1915 in Wakefield.  Alfred, known as Jackie, joined the Army in 1933 at the age of 17, but was called back to Kippax on his 18th birthday because his mother Winifred had a heart attack and passed away at the age of 39.  Alfred re-joined the Army in 1935.

Alfred snr. re-married Alma Farrar (1916-1989) in Castleford on 13th March 1937, and they moved to Owlett Hall, Kippax.  Alfred jnr. joined a racing stable in his youth, and later joined Dot Stephen’s ‘Sunshine Sally’ company as a comedian, appearing at Castleford Theatre on many occasions.  He also toured with Archie’s Juvenile band as a musician, and acted as a chauffeur.  Alfred’s parents had the cinema in Kippax (pictured below) for a time.  Alfred snr. was on the door, and Alma used to play the piano.

Alfred was a Sergeant during the War.  He served in the British Isles, Palestine, France, Belgium and Norway.  After the War, he lived on Westfield Lane, and passed away on 13th July 2009.  His sister, Eileen (1920-2012) lived with her husband Frank Cox (1915-1995) on Barrowby Lane, Halton, and her son and grandchildren still live locally.
