Royal Army Service Corps
Born: 14th August 1918
Story
Alfred Howson was the son of William Howson (1891-1976) and Annie Wigglesworth (1894-1977) who married in 1915. Before the War, Alfred was a shop assistant, working as an Outfitter salesman, and was living at 6 Primrose View, with his parents, uncle and widowed Grandmother, Sarah Ann Fawcett (1861-1946), who had a long and interesting life. Her first marriage to George Nicholson on 22nd September 1883 in Kippax was a miserable relationship, so she bigamously re-married Aaron Wigglesworth, and was tried for the offence, as reported on 26th March 1887:

Sarah’s grandson, Alfred Howson similarly made the local newspapers. Alfred joined the Royal Army Service Corps, and it was reported that on 16th December 1940, whilst driving a military lorry at Gibson Lane, he spotted an invalid in a wheel chair, recognised him, took his eyes off the road, and hit a stationary van. He pleaded guilty at Leeds West Riding Court to driving the lorry without due care, and was fined 15s – a nominal fine after the circumstances were taken into account. Alfred passed away in 1982.
